One leaf falls
alas! another
with the wind

一葉散る咄ひとはちる風の上
(hito ha chiru / totsu hito ha chiru / kaze no ue)

Hattori Ransetsu (1654-1707)

The autumn winds blow, the leaves fall, and three Butoh dancers from distant parts of the world find their way to San Francisco Zen Center to dance under the moon of the autumn sky.

  • Mari Osanai, from Japan, presents "Nesting"
  • Joan Laage, from Seattle, offers "Rivers Running Red"
  • Sicilian born Clara Burgio dances "Fallen Leaves"

(This haiku is a short, succinct reflection on our transient world. The first word of the second line—totsu—has a double meaning. It is an exclamation spoken by Zen Buddhists when enlightenment is achieved, and it is also the sound a paulownia leaf makes as it hits the ground upon falling.)
