07/17/2024, Gengyoko Tim Wicks, Kim Kōgen Dai-Hō Hart and Dōshin Dan Gudgel, dharma talk at City Center.
In week three of this four-part series, Dōshin Dan Gudgel leads a discussion of a section near the middle of “Busshō” in which Dōgen discusses the story of Nagarjuna’s transformation while on the teaching seat — manifesting a round, full-moon shape to demonstrate Buddha Nature. While traveling in China, Dōgen viewed a painting of this event, and has some strong criticisms of the painting, and of the monks who unhesitatingly accepted that it represented the true reality of that event. As usual, Dōgen attempts in this section to refocus us on the direct experience of this present moment, free of our ideas and concepts about the world.
