Dr. Steven Heine is professor and founding director of Asian Studies at Florida International University and an expert on East Asian religions and society, especially the transmission of Zen Buddhism from China to Japan, including the life and thought of Master Dōgen.
He has published more than three dozen books on these and related topics, including Dōgen and the Kōan Tradition, Did Dōgen Go to China?, Dōgen: Textual and Historical Studies, Readings of Dōgen’s Treasury of the True Dharma Eye, and Dōgen: Japan’s Original Zen Teacher. He has also translated and commented on several important Chinese koan collections. Dr. Heine was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun from the Japanese government for a lifetime of service to cross-cultural relations.
