Sandra Soto discovered butoh dance in Japan, where she lived for 4 years, generating a creative link with one of the initiators of this artistic current: Kazuo Ohno. From 1998 to 2002, Sandra was part of Kazuo Ohno's studio and also participated in the Flower of the Universe Fontaine Theater, in Yokohama, directed by Yoshito Ohno. In 1999 she began her first butoh solo performances.
Sandra has also been nurtured by the teachings of masters such as Yumiko Yoshioka, and Katsura Kan, with whom she has collaborated for the past 6 years. In 2019 she participated in the International Noh Theater Seminar, and in 2023 the Espace Culturel Bertin Poireé TENRI in Paris and at San Francisco Zen Center. In 2019 and 2022, Sandra performed at the International Butoh Dance Festival in Kyoto Japan.
Sandra graduated with a graduate degree in Dance Expression for Performing Arts from the University of Guadalajara, where she was a classical and contemporary ballet dancer. Currently, she is the Artistic Director of Popol Butoh, and is performing and teaching at different cultural places in Mexico.
