International Summer Volunteers at Tassajara

San Francisco Zen Center welcomes international visitors to participate in the International Summer Volunteer Program at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center. This program offers a unique opportunity for international participants to immerse themselves in the daily life of Tassajara, engage with the Zen community, and support the monastery’s seasonal operations. Volunteer stays are for a minimum of 2 weeks up to 12 weeks maximum. If you wish to apply, please fill out an application form.

 

About the Program

The International Summer Volunteer Program at Tassajara is an opportunity for international visitors to immerse themselves in Zen practice and community life while offering service in a structured, supportive environment. Volunteers engage in mindful participation in daily activities that sustain the monastery, deepening their connection to Zen traditions and practice.

As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Participate in meditation and Zen practice alongside the community
  • Engage in communal living and shared responsibilities in a spirit of generosity and service
  • Support the monastery through volunteer activities that align with Tassajara’s spiritual and environmental mission
  • Enjoy talks by Zen teachers, take workshops on Zen and Buddhism, and interact with visiting guests and Zen practitioners from around the world
  • Enjoy access to Japanese-style hot springs, an extensive Buddhist library, yoga space, and vast hiking trails in the Ventana wilderness
