Six Saturdays, 8:30 – 10 am PT

Studying different tenet systems of Buddhist thought, along with their limitations, can help Zen practitioners clarify their own school's understanding and see how zazen practice is based on this understanding.

Ninth-century Chan and Huayan ancestor Zongmi's Inquiry into the Origin of Humanity presents a short but profound analysis of Karmic Causality, Foundational Buddhism, Mind-Only, Middle-Way, and the One-Vehicle of Buddha-Nature.

This class is geared towards those who have some background in Buddhist philosophy and want to look more deeply into how such teachings can inform their practice of zazen, but all are welcome.

The main translation we will distribute for this study is Chapter 12 from Peter N. Gregory's book, Yuanren lun (Inquiry into the Origin of the Human Condition). An additional translation by Jan Yün-hua, Treatise on the Origin of Humanity (Yuanren lun), is available at this link as a free download or for purchase.
