Join us for an enlightening one-and-a-half-hour discussion, “Zen Intersections: Soto and Korean Zen in Conversation,” with Jiryu Rutschman-Byler of the San Francisco Zen Center as he hosts a thoughtful conversation with Anita Feng (Zen Master Jeong Ji) of the Blue Heron Zen Community. Drawing upon his deep understanding of Soto Zen, Jiryu will guide the conversation, eliciting from Feng her insights into the Korean Zen tradition of Master Seung Sahn, offering attendees a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of Zen Buddhism.
The conversation will explore the cultural adaptation of Zen in the West, with a particular focus on the nuances of kong-an (koan) training in Korean Zen, and the importance of meditation as the heart of Korean Zen practice.
This discussion is a beautiful introduction to an online course offered by Anita Feng: "The Compass of Zen: A Korean Lineage Tradition" (Tuesdays, September 5 – 26). The course explores the lineage tradition of Korean Zen as it has been presented in the West and discusses its unique techniques and cultural style. Attendance at the course is not required to benefit from the discussion, but the two certainly complement each other, promising a rich and comprehensive understanding of Korean Zen. Join us for this enlightening exchange of wisdom, as we broaden our hearts and minds and inspire our awakening as one.
