The Heart Sutra, an expression of deep practice, clear seeing, and liberation, is chanted daily in the Soto Zen tradition. This class explores its meaning, both historically and in our daily rituals. Together we’ll deepen our understanding and appreciation of the Heart Sutra, enhancing our practice and our lives.

In American culture, the language of the Heart Sutra can be puzzling, especially its concepts of emptiness and form and its cascade of "no"s. How does this relate to the compassion that Avalokiteshvara represents? In this class, we will observe how this sutra embodies devotion and expresses the Buddha's teachings, and delve into its significance for our personal lives, our communities, and the entire world. Grounded in zazen, our approach will include text analysis, writing prompts, brief expositions, and group discussions.
