When one displays the buddha mudra with one’s whole body and mind, sitting upright in this samadhi even for a short time, everything in the entire dharma world becomes buddha mudra, and all space in the universe completely becomes enlightenment.—Eihei Dogen
This sentence from the Self-Fulfillment Samadhi presents a radical proclamation that challenges our modern linear logic. The Self-Fulfillment Samadhi, a portion of Dogen’s Bendowa, provides his account of the inner meaning and purpose of zazen. This Self-Fulfillment Samadhi also heralds Dogen’s environmental teachings, celebrating the spiritual function of earth, grasses, and trees.
This seminar will feature a close reading and commentary on the Self-Fulfillment Samadhi text, as well as related materials from other Zen and Dogen teachings, with time for questions and discussion.

Master Dogen’s Zazen Meditation Handbook (Tuttle)
This workshop is the first in a two-part series from Taigen Dan Leighton, to be followed by Dogen’s Universally Recommended Instructions for Zazen—Fukanzazengi, and is included among our classes and seminars in the Zen Foundations Series. Please note that while it is not mandatory to attend both sessions, participants are encouraged to attend both to gain a fuller understanding of Dogen’s teachings. Recordings of the session will be available for those who wish to revisit the teachings or are unable to attend in person.
