The secret of all the teachings of Buddha is how to live in each moment, how to obtain absolute freedom moment after moment. This is the theme of the Genjo Koan.— Suzuki Roshi

In these post election days, it is helpful to remember that many of our ancestors practiced amid great difficulty. Dogen himself experienced the turbulence of radical societal changes, as well as extreme pressures from the Tendai sect that felt threatened by his unadorned practice of Zen. Yet Dogen's practice continued, under all circumstances, and his dedication to a more authentic, practice-oriented Zen survives today. In Genjo Koan, he extends a wonderful and challenging invitation: how to engage fully in the present moment and discover liberation in the midst of our daily lives, no matter what the external conditions may be. If we are going to be helpful, we must nurture our capacity to engage with life as we find it. Whether you are new to Dogen’s teachings or have been reflecting on the Genjo Koan for years, we welcome you to engage in this fresh inquiry and practice.

When you find your place where you are, practice occurs, actualizing the fundamental point. When you find your way at this moment, practice occurs, actualizing the fundamental point.— Eihei Dogen

Join Diane and Cynthia—devoted, non-scholarly students of Dogen—in exploring Genjo Koan’s liberatory potential. Whether you are new to Dogen’s teachings or have been reflecting on the Genjo Koan for years, we welcome you to engage in fresh inquiry and practice, bringing together insights to make Genjo Koan come alive for us at a time when it is much needed.
