Eight Sundays, 10 – 11:30 am PT

The traditions of Buddhism and Yoga each offer practices that lead to samadhi, the imperturbable composure of body and mind. The eightfold noble path, taught by the Buddha, and the eight-limbed path of Yoga, taught by Patanjali, both culminate in samadhi. Mindfulness of body and breath is central to each tradition, offering a gateway to this transformative journey.

Each class will include:

  1. Yoga Postures (Asanas): A sequence of asanas will initiate mental focus on body and breath.
  2. Breath Practices (Pranayama): Techniques from the Yoga tradition and breathing practices from Buddhist texts, such as the Satipatthana Sutta and Anapanasati Sutta, both from the Theravada tradition.
  3. Meditation (Zazen): Each session concludes with a period of zazen in the Soto Zen tradition.

At the beginning of each class, Shokuchi will offer Dharma instruction from the relevant texts for these practices. There will be time for Q&A in each class, and one-on-one practice discussion will be offered by appointment. A recording of each class will be available for home practice.

Course highlights:

  1. Experience the harmony of Zen and Yoga
  2. Progress through techniques for mental tranquility and intentional breath
  3. Engage in the meditative practice of zazen

Set up a quiet space with the following items:

  1. Yoga mat
