Eihei Dogen, the Japanese founder of Soto Zen, was one of the world's greatest philosophers. But he was also the head of a monastic community. At first teaching just a few monks, he went on to create Eiheiji temple, still one of the head temples in Japan.
Many of Dogen's writings are addressed to his monks, outlining their conduct, and mixing the mundane and the profound.
This class will look at selected monastic writings by Dogen and explore what is still relevant in their timeless wisdom. Excerpts will be chosen and handouts provided from each of the following texts:
Dōgen's Pure Standards for the Zen Community: A Translation of Eihei Shingi
Translated by Taigen Dan Leighton & Shohaku Okumura
Treasury of the True Dharma Eye: Zen Master Dogen's Shobo Genzo
Edited by Kazuaki Tanahashi
Dogen's Shobogenzo Zuimonki

A Primer of Soto Zen: A Translation Of Dogen's Shobogenzo Zuimonki
