The 2019 Tea and Zen Seminar will be held at Green Gulch Farm Zen Center from Wednesday, July 31 to Sunday, August 4. This Seminar is open to those who are studying the Way of Tea in the Urasenke Tradition. Participants will join the Green Gulch community in Zen meditation, explore the connection between Zen and the Way of Tea, and  enjoy the relaxed setting of a temple surrounded by acres of beautiful parkland. Following the five-day Seminar, a two-day Incense Workshop will be offered.

We will also be offering instruction for beginners on August 5 and 6.

The Head Teacher for both the Seminar and Workshop is Christy Bartlett, Director of the San Francisco Urasenke Foundation. Teaching facilities include the three tea rooms and mizuya of the Green Gulch teahouse, a roji, and the large Green Gulch kitchen.

Participants may attend both the Seminar and Incense Workshop, or either event separately.

Five-day Seminar
The daily schedule includes meditation, and instruction in  temae (nyumon, konarai, shikaden, okuden). There will also be classes in making okashi and carving chashaku. A highlight of the seminar is practice with chabana; selecting and placing flowers from the extensive Green Gulch gardens. For those who love chabako, early morning impromptu gatherings at the beach or in the garden are also a possibility.

Participants from out-of-town are advised to arrive on Tuesday, July 30.

Two-day Tea and Incense Workshop
The Way of Tea and the appreciation of incense have long been intertwined. This workshop will explore those historical connections, as well as how incense is enjoyed and practiced in the tearoom. Instruction will begin with how to prepare the incense burner (koro), and the manner in which to appreciate incense, and then proceed to temae and shichijishiki procedures that include incense. Both fragrant wood and blended incense will be addressed. It will be a redolent two days!

Two-day Introductory Workshop
This workshop will emphasize instruction in being a guest in the tearoom, and the basic procedures and movements of Tea. It is open to those who wish to begin the study of chanoyu or who are currently practicing ryaku bon.

Those attending only the Incense Workshop or Introductory Workshop arrive on Sunday, August 4.

Green Gulch Zen Center is just north of San Francisco, California, in a valley that opens to the Pacific Ocean. Overnight accommodations including vegetarian meals will be provided in our guest facilities.
