City Center is pleased to offer its first One-Day Sitting of 2025 in our newly renovated zendo. This daylong meditation will also be part of the four-week practice session led by Abbot Doshin Mako Voelkel focused on Dogen Zenji’s Tenzo Kyokun (Instructions to the Cook). Join us and engage anew in the timeless practice of Zen in our beautifully revitalized temple!
This sitting kicks off a special Dharma talk series with former SFZC Tenzos, held Wednesdays at 7:45pm PT and Saturdays at 10:15am PT. It begins this Saturday with Edward Espe Brown during the Celebratory One-Day Sit.
One-day sittings offer traditional Soto Zen all-day meditation practice. In order to understand the nature of our formal retreats, and to be clear about the details of the practice, please review a typical one-day sitting schedule. We ask those who attend one-day sittings to commit to participating in the complete schedule.
We will be using the traditional Zen form of oryoki for eating some of our meals in the zendo. While meals are included as part of the one-day sitting, you will need an oryoki set to participate. You may either bring your own set, purchase one ($60), or rent a set for the day. For anyone who is new to the form of oryoki or who would like a refresher, an oryoki training & review will be held in the City Center dining room at 4:30pm on Friday, 2/28.
If you will need a chair in the zendo for the entire day, please indicate this when you sign up.
