The August sesshin at Green Dragon Temple comes at a beautiful time at Green Gulch—the height of the growing season. We will look at Dogen's Mountains and Waters Sutra, studying the reality of our interconnected existence. Sesshin is an intensive time to gather the mind and deepen one’s practice in a traditional silent Soto Zen meditation retreat that includes sitting (zazen) and walking meditation (including daily outdoor walking), Dharma talks and private interviews with senior teachers, formal zendo (meditation hall) meals,* and work practice.
In order to help you understand the basic features of our formal retreats, and to be clear about the details of the practice, please review a typical sesshin schedule, as well as our guidelines for zendo conduct. We ask those who attend sesshin to commit to following these guidelines and to participating in the schedule completely. **If you have not participated in a San Francisco Zen Center sesshin before, please communicate with the head of the meditation hall (Ino) before registering. If you have questions regarding the schedule or guidelines, please also consult with the Ino via email () before completing your registration.
**Prerequisite for sitting sesshin: at least one, and preferably two, one-day sittings at Green Gulch or City Center.
Orientation: Please arrive for dinner at 6 pm and attend the orientation immediately following. Orientation for sesshin meals and instruction in the use of the eating bowls (oryoki) will be offered at 4:30 pm (before dinner).
*Each sesshin participant will need a set of eating bowls and utensils (oryoki) for the formal meal practice in the meditation hall. If you do not have a set, you will need to purchase one for an additional $55. To purchase your own oryoki set, contact the Green Gulch Farm Ino by email (). Meals are included in the cost of sesshin.
Fee: $320; $288 current SFZC members. (We offer a few partial scholarships for people with limited income. Please call the main office for details, at 415.383.3134.)
