Sometimes Slowly: Affliction as Vehicle to Alleviate Suffering, CC 8/8 - 8/10

with Ryotan Cynthia Kear, Patsy Creedy and Tim Wicks
in the Conference Center at 308 Page Street

A two-day retreat
Friday, August 8 - Sunday, August 10, 2014
Begins Friday at 5 pm
(overnight accommodations filled but space still available for commuters)

Our afflictions and hindrances (eg, character defects) can be such sources for suffering—for us and others. Yet they can also be our greatest dharma gates to liberation and transformation. Often these afflictions become cudgels we use to further beat and abuse ourselves, or they serve as the ever-present unconscious background that we react from out of habit energy. These approaches only further feed and reinforce that which we seek freedom from. How can we learn to work with these in a manner that allows us to examine them neutrally, work with them productively and ultimately transform them, thus alleviating our suffering?

The Bhrama Viharas (also called the Four Immeasurables, the Four Abodes or the Four Sublime States) offer a clear, compassionate way. Join us for a weekend retreat for people in recovery at City Center, where we will study and apply them—for the well-being of ourselves and others.

The weekend will also provide a great opportunity to experience the “inside” of a temple, as we will follow the residents’ schedule. This will include oryoki breakfast on Saturday morning; several periods of zazen and walking meditation throughout the weekend; and dharma talks and discussion on the Brahma Viharas. These and other readings will be supplied.

This will be a gentle retreat, perfect for anyone who wants to deepen their practice and their recovery. The weekend will end with a twelve-step meeting and tea and cookies Sunday afternoon.
