Charlie Pokorny

Charlie Pokorny has dedicated his talents to studying and teaching dharma, and his life as a Zen priest expresses his devotion to the well-being of others. During his time as a resident of San Francisco Zen Center, he has supported the organization by taking on numerous positions of responsibility. He holds a master’s degree from Stanford University in Religious Studies, and he brings a breadth of perspective on the direction that Soto Zen is taking in the world today through his position as director of the Soto Zen Buddhist Association.

“I lived as a resident at Tassajara and Green Gulch Farm from 1994 to 2006, serving as treasurer, tenzo (head cook), director, and shuso (head monk), participating in the Diversity and Multiculturalism Committee and ordaining as a priest in 1999. I currently live with my partner, Sarah Emerson, and our daughter, Kaya, in Sebastopol and serve as director for the Soto Zen Buddhist Association, a national association of Soto Zen dharma teachers and priests. I have deep gratitude for this way of practice and the San Francisco Zen Center and see serving on the Board as a way to help ensure that this practice offering may grow, thrive, and bring great benefit to the world.”
