July 14-18, 2014 (Monday-Friday)What is it to be a monk in the world?
Most of us practice where we live - in the "marketplace," a wide field of homes, jobs, relationships, technology, cars, endless craving, distractions and preference. Yet the resonance of practice draws us and we wonder, amid the complexity and demands of life, can we, like the fourth monk, travel from the monastery of our lives into the world of the marketplace and home again maintaining our equanimity, integrity and embodying our vow? Can we be a monk in the world? What would that look like and what does it mean? Within the wholeness of Tassajara and the wisdom of sangha, we'll ponder this koan. For a monk in the world, what is the life of vow, refuge and renunciation?
