There are a wide variety of ways to experience Zen practice at Tassajara, from the daily introduction to Zen meditation offered during guest season, to the fall and winter monastic practice periods. We warmly invite you to explore at whatever level you choose, and encourage you to ask any questions may have. Zen Meditation at Tassajara
Zen meditation (zazen) is offered every morning and evening, and is an important part of life at Tassajara. Whether you already have a sitting practice, or are simply exploring, we invite you to come sit with us and see what unfolds. Zazen instruction is offered every day at 4:00 p.m., and includes both meditation instruction and a brief introduction to Zen forms. Summer Work Practice
A wonderful opportunity for living and working within community where Zen meditation is the foundational practice. Fall and Winter Practice Periods
Each ninety-day practice period follows the traditional Soto Zen monastic schedule. This residential training time is beneficial for deep self study and for all beings. Retreats
Each unique retreat is designed by the teachers to guide participants in an exploration of them selves. Teachers from the Soto Zen tradition come together with Yoga Instructors, Chefs, Psychologists, Poets and more. Groups are as small as 8 and as large as 25 and range from 2 nights to 7 nights. Guest Practice
Guest practice combines both residential and guest experience. Participants join the residents for morning zen meditation and 3 ½ hours of work, and are free to enjoy Tassajara as guests in the afternoon, with dinner in the dining room.
