Retreats

We invite you to join our outstanding teachers to explore the variety of ways that Zen Buddhist practice as well as other practices can inform and enrich your life.

Zen Meditation and Buddhism

There are a wide variety of ways to experience Zen practice at Tassajara. We warmly invite you to explore at whatever level you choose, and encourage you to ask any questions may have.

Guest Practice Program

An opportunity to practice Zen meditation and work alongside the Tassajara residential community.

Study Weeks

Explore Zen teachings, meditation, and work practice under the guidance of an experienced teacher.

Hiking & Environs

Hiking trails are abundant around Tassajara, which is located in the rugged Los Padres National Forest.

The Baths and Hot Springs

The Japanese-style bathhouse has separate sides for men and women (the men’s side has co-ed bathing in the evenings), and is clothing optional. Each side has two hot plunges, a steam room, communal showers, a private bath, spacious sun decks, and creek access.

Stone Office Talks

An opportunity to discuss with a senior Tassajara student, in an open format, any aspect of Zen, Buddhism, or monastic life that may be of interest. Talks are usually offered on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday evenings from 8:00-9:00pm.

Dharma Talks/Events

are also offered regularly by resident and visiting teachers and retreat leaders. Look for event times and locations posted outside the office and dining room.

The Swimming Pool

The pool has a changing room, a restroom, and a cold shower. No lifeguard is on duty. While children are welcomed at all times at the pool, the suggested children’s swimming time is from 1:00-3:00pm. At all other times, lap swimming takes precedence.

Bocce Ball

There is a Bocce Ball court in front of the Pine Rooms and instructions are available in the office.

The Library

Open for reading and browsing. Books are not available for checking out unless you are a student.

Tassajara History Albums

Articles and photos chronicling Tassajara’s history and are found on the porch behind the office.

Board Games

Several board games are available on the porch.
