Seiho Qayyum Johnson
Seiho Qayyum Johnson was raised in an American Sufi family in upstate New York and Tucson, Arizona. His name is one of the 99 characteristic names of Allah in Arabic, translated as “Self-Subsisting”. He received a degree in Religious Studies in 2006, the same year he moved to Green Gulch Farm Zen Center after a short trip to Japan. He is keenly interested in how engaging our true, interdependent nature, manifested in zazen (seated meditation), allows us to embrace the dynamic relational activity required in our lives. Zazen allows us to properly understand a way of both embodying compassionate skillful means, speaking truth to power and advocating for justice in the wider world. The practice of profound self-inquiry into the origins of our own suffering cultivates a resilient capacity to “show up” with dignity for all the challenging circumstances of our lives.

Qayyum is devoted to supporting practitioners toward the self-empowerment and freedom that comes from creating community and ritual in our everyday life which nurture a wide, equanimous perspective. Sangha and regular dedicated contemplative practice dignifies and validates one’s emotional life while also challenging habitual patterns that obscure our inherently awakened nature.

He proposes Zen practice as a working person’s pragmatic activity. He teaches by encouraging one to understand dependent co-arising in light of poetry, contemporary science, and the real texture of our daily lives, thus opening new insights into the compelling psychological narrative that is everyone’s reality. Qayyum’s teaching intentions are inspired by the bodhisattva vow to work tirelessly for the universal liberation of all beings and the belief that we are all in this together. Buddhadharma affirms that we are never alone. By collecting and clarifying our most sincere intention, we can come to be at ease as we contribute to the love, harmony and beauty of the world-at-large.
