Instructions for the Head Cook – Tenzokyokun (class), GGF 10/23 – 11/27
With Central Abbess Linda Ruth Cutts
Five Mondays, October 23 – November 27, 7:30 – 9 (not meeting on November 13)
This five-week class will be studying the beloved text Tenzokyokun: Instructions for the Head Cook by Dōgen Zenji, the well-known Japanese Zen Master of the 13th century. These instructions have inspired and clarified our practice and have been read and studied in Zen temples for many years. We will also be looking at commentaries on the text by Shunryu Suzuki, Kosho Uchiyama, and Shohaku Okumura who have brought forth the teachings in their talks.
The Tenzokyokun is filled with memorable Zen stories and koans grounded in our everyday activity. The simple actions involved in preparing meals and taking care of ingredients and utensils is shown to be the gateway to an enlivened life of practice and vow. We too will be supported and encouraged to enact these practices with mindfulness and care in our daily activities.
During our class we will have a chance to discuss our practice in light of the Tenzokyokun, learn by heart some of the memorable passages from the text, and write a reflection paper. The class is appropriate for beginners as well as for those who have established their practice.
