Explore the creative process through the ancient art of brushwork.

Anyone can take up a brush, follow stroke order, draw lines, and form characters. By copying ancient masters’ samples, even a beginner can create a fairly good piece of calligraphy. This art does not require great creative endeavor as in painting or sculpture. On the other hand, because anyone can practice this, people can easily tell attentively drawn lines from those that were mindlessly drawn. Our presence should be expressed on each line we draw. Each line is drawn naturally, spontaneously, decisively, and uniquely. Our artistic, meditative, and life experience is evident in each line to all viewers. So we learn to render each stroke with total concentration and relaxation. Please join me and enjoy drawing lines.

This retreat will begin with dinner in the Green Gulch dining room on Friday June 21 at 6:00pm. We welcome you to arrive before this time to get settled in your room and discover the beauty of Green Gulch farm. Our time together will come to a close at 11:30am on Sunday June 23.

See Kaz discuss and demonstrate the immediacy of his work and one-stroke brush technique in this video made during a previous Tassajara workshop.

Fees: $170; $153 current SFZC members. Please note that the retreat fee does not include accommodations. Accommodations at Green Gulch.
