is a retired professor of Renaissance English Literature and a former administrator at San Francisco State University. As an advocate of service learning and community outreach for both students and faculty, he divided his time between classroom teaching and designing ways for the university to serve the city of San Francisco and the Bay Area. He came to San Francisco Zen Center in 1976 and lived in the Page Street building from 1976-82 except for his sabbatical year at Tassajara in 1977-78. He served as shuso at City Center in the spring of 2013. He is a founding director of Vimala Sangha where Lew Richmond is the founding teacher; he regularly attends Vimala Sangha
in Mill Valley led by Ed Sattizahn, and the Presidio Hill Zen Group
led by Steve Weintraub. He lives across the street from City Center with his wife Megan and teenage daughter Annie.
