Buddhist practices, including those of Zen, are incomplete without the investigation of social injustices and the ways we inadvertently perpetuate systems of privilege and oppression in our unexamined behaviors and beliefs. In this class, we will bring the wisdom and insight that comes from mindfulness and compassion practices to inform our understanding and actions regarding social justice and anti-racism efforts in our private and public lives. We will support each other to address our own racism and white privilege using multicultural theories and tools along with Buddhist teachings and practices. We will also consider the historical context of contemporary racial oppression to more fully understand the roots of the racial injustice we will confront in this class.

Our goal is to support San Francisco Zen Center’s mission of celebrating diversity and fostering inclusive community by learning how we as white people can deeply honor ourselves and people of color and act from a place of compassion and awareness. We wish to provide a framework, skills, and experiences that contribute to the ongoing transformation of our hearts and minds and enable us to challenge racism and white privilege on every level, from the personal to systemic.

The class will include readings, presentations, discussion, reflections, and roleplays. In the final meeting, we will invite participants to create their own action plans.

This class is open to anyone who identifies as a white person and is open to courageous self-exploration with others. We ask that participants commit to attending all sessions.
