Introduction to Zen Meditation (II) – Taught in Mandarin Chinese
With Rev. Gendo Lucy Xiao
in the Buddha Hall
Four Wednesdays, April 4, 11, 18, 25, 5:30 – 7 pm
In “Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind,” Suzuki Roshi, the founder of San Francisco Zen Center said, “That everything is included within your mind is the essence of mind … Even though waves arise, the essence of your mind is pure; it is just like clear water with a few waves. Actually water always have waves. Waves are the practice of the water.”
This class will introduce a practice called “just sitting” or “shikantaza,” which was brought to Japan from China by Great Master Dogen in the Song Dynasty and transmitted to us here by Suzuki Roshi to help us see the waves in the mind and its pure essence. As students are more familiar with how to relax and settle their body and mind, this class will teach the “just sitting” practice. It will discuss the kind of attitudes one needs to have in practice, as well as how to work with hindrances one may encounter. The class will also introduce other forms of practice that can be useful to help softening and settling our heart/mind, such as bowing and chanting. The class will be taught in Mandarin Chinese and is practice-oriented. It is suitable for those who have taken Introduction to Zen Meditation (I) or have had some experience in meditation.
Please wear loose and comfortable clothes to the class. The class will cover these topics:
- Relaxing and harmonizing body, breath and mind
- “Just sitting” practice
- Right attitudes in practice
- Working with hindrances
- The role of a teacher
