Introduction to Zen Meditation (I) – Taught in Mandarin Chinese
With Rev. Gendo Lucy Xiao
in the Buddha Hall
Four Wednesdays, January 10, 17, 24, 31, 5:30 – 7 pm
Zen practice is a process of studying and realizing the self. Through sitting meditation and other forms of practice, we learn how to relax the body, harmonize emotions, develop awareness, and cultivate wisdom and loving kindness. However, Zen practice is not limited to just sitting on the cushion, it’s also about learning how to be present in each moment as we conduct our everyday activities and relate to people in our life.
Through instructions, exercises and discussions, this class series will teach the basics of Zen meditation step by step. Students will learn how to start and maintain a regular practice and bring mindfulness into everyday life. The class will be taught in Mandarin Chinese and is practice-oriented. It is suitable for beginners as well as those who have learned meditation in the past and wish to deepen their practice. It is our hope that through this class more people will be connected to Zen practice and receive benefits of the Dharma.
Please wear loose and comfortable clothes to the class. The class will introduce topics on:
- How to create a supportive environment for practice (such as regulating food and sleep, choosing time and place for practice, etc.)
- Exercises to increase flexibility of the body and benefit Qi flow of the meridians
- Sitting meditation: different kinds of sitting postures
- Principles and methods for working with body, breath and mind
- Developing awareness of the body, feelings and thoughts
- Walking meditation
- Eating meditation
- Bringing mindfulness practice to everyday life
