Introduction to Alayavijnana–Storehouse Consciousness (Class), CC 5/11 – 6/1
with Kyoshin Wendy Lewis
in the City Center Dining Room
May 11 – June 1
Four Thursdays, 7:30 – 9 pm
This class will introduce alayavijnana, the Buddhist unconscious or storehouse consciousness. Our study will include examining dependent arising and karma. Considering karma as action includes understanding the circular aspect of origins and consequences of action as they reinforce each other. Most of this is occurring on an unconscious level, and effort is required to bring it more into consciousness. This circular quality is what enlightenment is proposed to interrupt. Enlightenment requires, according to Buddhist teaching, understanding the functioning of the mind—patterns of thought, emotion, and interpretation based in desire, aversion, and indifference. The study of concepts like alayavijnana can support the development of this understanding.
Appropriate for beginners and experienced practitioners.
