Fall 2017 Practice Period at City Center, 10/2 – 12/9

The Harmony of Difference and Equality

Led by City Center Abiding Abbot Rinso Ed Sattizahn
October 2 – December 9

About the Fall 2017 Practice Period – The Harmony of Difference and Equality
A Practice Period is a traditional intensive training period common in the schools of Buddhism and varying between six to twelve weeks in length. There are three practice periods offered onsite each year at our City Center temple—Winter, Spring, and Fall. Participants can engage in a practice period in one of three ways: as a resident, as a commuter, and online (details below).

The theme of the Fall 2017 practice period is inspired by the eighth century poem “The Harmony of Difference and Equality” by the Chinese Zen Master Shitou Xiqian. Shitou says, “If you don’t understand the way right before you, how will you know the path as you walk?” Can we wake up to the reality of our life and see the path before us? In walking our path how do we harmonize our personal needs with our responsibilities to the wider world? We will address these questions through this text and its application to modern Zen practice.

As part of the practice period, the abbot will also teach an 8-week class, Introduction to The Sandokai: Harmony of Difference and Equality [link available soon], on Tuesdays, 7:30 – 9 pm, October 10 – November 28.

Weekly events include an oryoki meal, classes, ceremonies, dharma talks, and Wednesday afternoon teas with the practice period leader. This is a way to develop and deepen your practice together with others in a supportive environment. During the ten weeks students will have the opportunity to meet individually with the practice period leader and/or other practice leaders. Participation will also include two Saturday one-day sittings, October 7 and November 4. The practice period concludes with a seven-day Rohatsu sesshin, beginning the evening of Saturday, December 2 and ending the evening of Saturday, December 9.

  • Access to the Tuesday class web page which contains videos of each class.
  • Weekly Wednesday practice period tea and dharma discussion.
  • An invitation to join the dokusan or practice discussion schedule.
  • All temple Dharma talks, ceremonies, and daily zazen periods.
