The Path of Practice (class), CC 10/9 – 11/13

Led by Ryushin Paul Haller
In the City Center dining room

  Six Mondays, 7:30 – 9 pm, October 9 – November 13

Offered in conjunction with this class is an introductory half-day workshop on Saturday, September 30, The Body-Breath-Mind of Zazen.

Even though the path of practice unfolds uniquely for each person, there are features that are common to us all. Initially we’re challenged to discover how to be still and see what’s happening in our heart and mind. This is zazen. Then we’re challenged to let that awareness reveal the patterns of our thoughts, feelings and responses and how they shape our behavior. Finally, we’re challenged to let the insights that have been revealed, guide and support us as we endeavor to bring kindness and wisdom to our relationships, work and the continuous discovery of how to live this one wild and precious life.

This class will describe traditional Zen techniques of body, breath and mind and offer support and guidance in practicing them. There will also be suggested mindfulness practices to help bring awareness to thoughts and emotions and how influence behaviors. The teachings of the Zen text, Sandokai, will be used to elucidate how to integrate our practice intention into everyday activities and relationships.

There will be a half-day workshop called The Body-Breath-Mind of Zazen that will offer the opportunity to practice the techniques that are the foundation of this class. It is on Saturday, September 30, 1:30 – 4:30 pm, in the Buddha Hall. Separate registration for the workshop is required.
