Yesterday afternoon, eighteen returning residents made their way back into Tasssajara where they join the four remaining monks who stood up to meet the fire. Ten people, however, did not make it in as there was a lot of back burning activity close to the road and they were turned back. They spent the night in Jamesburg and Carmel Valley and hope to make it in today.
There is much cleaning and repair work to be done before we can reopen and continue this year's guest season. As of now, Tassajara is closed through August 2nd, but much depends on how things go in the days to come. Please continue to check with us for updates. We will also email updates for people who sign up in the form above.
We are accepting student applications for the remainder of the guest season through work period: July 25th through September 26th, for a minimum of 5 days. More information and application are here.
Sitting with Fire has posted images of the road in and out of Tassajara, showing the scope of the burned areas and the pockets of green here and there that were spared.
Over the weekend, KUSP (Central Coast Public Radio) interviewed Abbot Steve Stücky on the effort to save Tassajara from fire and how that relates with Zen practice. The interview is available as an audio stream.
We are working hard to determine the financial impact of the fires, both in terms of damages and lost income from the guest season. So far, we have received a wonderful and generous response from our community of friends, students, alumni and guests. We appreciate all donations, so please continue to give what you can.
You can also give by check payable to San Francisco Zen Center noting Tassajara Fire on the memo line, and mail it to:

Thank you so much for your generosity.
