Catherine Gammon is a fiction writer, writing teacher, and Soto Zen priest. Catherine’s novel Isabel Out of the Rain was published in 1991. Her shorter fiction has appeared in many literary journals, and she recently published Beauty and the Beast, a collection of early stories from the 1970s. From 1992-2000, Catherine taught in the MFA program in creative writing at the University of Pittsburgh.
Beginning in 2000, Catherine trained for ten years in residence at Green Gulch Farm Zen Center and Tassajara Zen Mountain Center. She was ordained as a priest by Tenshin Reb Anderson Roshi in 2005, and served as shuso, or head monk, for the Spring 2010 practice period at Green Dragon Temple/Green Gulch Farm. In summer 2010, Catherine served as visiting priest to the Dancing Mountains Sangha in the U.K. and in 2011 returned to Pittsburgh, where she has been co-leading the CityDharma sitting group.
Catherine has offered Writing as a Wisdom Project at various venues in the U.K., at Stillpoint Zen Community in Pittsburgh, at Brooklyn Zen Center, and at Green Gulch Farm.
