This one-year, experiential training program is intended to help participants develop a sustainable daily meditation practice and the fundamental skills of mindfulness and body awareness that support bringing practice to everyday activities and relationships. The training extends throughout one year. Some experience in meditation would help but is not essential. We will use the modalities of sitting meditation, guided meditation, yoga, sensing, mindfulness activities, inquiry, exploration of themes in diads, triads and smaller peer groups, etc. to enable us to apply the principles and practices of Zen to our daily lives in the marketplace.
There will be three parts to the course:
First Trimester:
Establishing the fundamentals of sitting practice, cultivating awareness of physical, mental, and emotional experiences, and the ability to bring mindfulness to daily activities. These will be continued throughout all three trimesters.
Second Trimester:
Exploring intra- and interpersonal habits of thoughts, feelings, actions and re-actions that arise in everyday situations and learning ways to practice with them.
Third Trimester:
Discovering how the insights we are gaining through practice can be expressed and embodied in all aspects of our lives and how the cultivation and practice of intention can support this.
Participation requires a commitment to the following:
- Daily sitting at home (15-30 minutes) or at Zen Center
- Daily body and mindfulness practices
- Attendance at the scheduled twice-monthly EPP all-participants meetings (Saturdays and Thursdays, see dates and times below)
- Attendance at the twice-monthly peer support group meetings (1½ hour meetings, days and dates will be determined by the participants)
- Monthly written reflections
Fees per trimester: $300 regular; $270 current members; $240 limited income. Fees include a $30 non-refundable processing fee. Participants sign up for each trimester separately. Scholarships are available; please see below.
