Taigen Dan Leighton was ordained as a Soto Zen priest and received dharma transmission from Tenshin Reb Anderson, and lived for years at San Francisco Zen Center. Taigen also trained extensively in Japan. He currently leads the Ancient Dragon Zen Gate meditation group in Chicago (www.ancientdragon.org), and formerly founded the Mountain Source Sangha in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Leighton is author of Zen Questions: Zazen, Dogen, and the Spirit of Creative Inquiry; Faces of Compassion: Classic Bodhisattva Archetypes and Their Modern Expression; and Visions of Awakening Space and Time: Dogen and the Lotus Sutra. He is editor and co-translator of Dogen's Extensive Record: A Translation of the Eihei Koroku; Dogen's Pure Standards for the Zen Community: A Translation of Eihei Shingi; Cultivating the Empty Field: The Silent Illumination of Zen Master Hongzhi; and The Wholehearted Way: A Translation of Eihei Dogen's Bendowa with Commentary by Kosho Uchiyama Roshi. He has written articles or translated primary writings in numerous other books and journals. 
Leighton has taught since 1994 at the Institute of Buddhist Studies of the Berkeley Graduate Theological Union, from which he received a PhD. He taught for four years at Loyola University in Chicago, and continues to teach online at the Institute of Buddhist Studies.
