Zen and Yoga Workshops at ZaZEN, June - October 2013

San Francisco Zen Center programs

offered at ZaZEN Filbert Street

Pulpit rock

In Zen Buddhism, zazen is a meditative discipline practitioners perform to calm the body and the mind, and be able to concentrate enough to experience insight into the nature of existence. Zazen is considered the heart of Zen Buddhist practice.

At Zazen we offer a range of practices each of which is a way of cultivating calm centeredness, spaciousness, and embodied meditative presence. Our practices are a way of stopping, breaking from habitual conditioning and interpretations of the world, opening up space for a free, joyful, affirmative relation to the world as it is.

Workshops Offered:

Movement and Stillness:
An Afternoon of Zen and Yoga
June 2, 2013, 1 - 4 pm
with Sofia Fohrman and Ango Sara Tashker

Join us for an afternoon of discussion and experiential learning on the cushion and the mat to explore the dynamics of movement and stillness in both meditation and asana practice.

Liberation in the Details
June 23 and August 17, 2013, 1 - 4 pm
with Jody Greene and Shundo David Haye

In the traditions of zen and vinyasa flow yoga, we are asked to attend to the finer details of our body, breath, and mind. Come explore the arts of attention in an afternoon of sitting, breathwork, and movement.

Returning to the Source: A Mid-Summer Zen and Restorative Yoga Retreat
July 13, 2013, 1 - 4 pm
with Erin Merk

In this workshop we will explore a variety of gentle movement, sequences and supported postures to encourage relaxed and supple tissues, effortless breath, awakened spine, and deep rest.

The Arising of Stillness in Zen and Yoga
July 20, 2013, 1 - 4 pm
with Shokuchi Deirdre Carrigan and
Shundo David Haye

We will begin the afternoon with Yoga Asana, cultivating awareness of the subtle energies of the body as we practice yoga postures. From this peaceful process, a sense of stillness of mind and body will begin to arise, and this stillness will deepen and expand during a period of Zazen.

Yoga, Zen and The Three Jewels
July 27, August 31 and September 28, 2013
1 - 4 pm
with Lisa Jansen, Judith Randall, and Connie Cummings

Each class will explore one of the Zen Teaching jewels: Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. All levels welcome. Although this is a series, if you cannot attend all 3 practices, drop-ins will be welcome.
